03b · Competitor sentiment
Rivals' paying readers are angry about the subscription, not the journalism. That's The Ken's opening.
I ran the same aspect-level analysis on five rivals: 1,325 reviews of The Morning Context, ET Prime, Mint, Moneycontrol and Business Standard, each read and tagged by hand. Every one of them gets praise for content. Readers who say they pay are angry about ads they still see, upsell pop-ups, sales calls, renewals they can't cancel, and payments that don't unlock anything. The Ken has none of the first four, and it can fix the fifth.
Store ratings flatter everyone. Paying readers don't.
Each rival's Google Play rating against the average stars from reviewers who say they pay. The big apps prompt for ratings and reply to almost every review with a template, which keeps store averages high.
Store rating vs what paying readers give
Payers: ET 75, Mint 87, Moneycontrol 49, Business Standard 37 reviewers who say they pay or paid. *The Morning Context and The Ken are paid-only apps, so I show the average of all written reviews (TMC: all 138; The Ken: store reviews 2023–26).
Sentiment by aspect, six brands
Net sentiment = (positive − negative) ÷ mentions, from −1 to +1. The small number is the mention count. Green is positive and red is negative, and the stronger the colour, the stronger the sentiment. Hover a cell for details. Faded cells have fewer than 5 mentions.

Read with care. The Ken and The Morning Context are every written review those apps have. For ET, Mint, Moneycontrol and Business Standard I read 300 (BS: 287): the 200 most recent, plus about 100 that mention subscriptions, price or ads. That mix over-represents paywall and billing topics for those four, so compare the direction of a cell more than its exact size. "n/a": paywall wasn't a separate aspect in The Ken's set, where those reviews were tagged as price or billing.
Five patterns that repeat across rivals
Counts are reviews in each brand's labelled set, with a quote from that brand's reviewers.
1. Paid, but the app doesn't know it
Mint 23 · ET 19 · Moneycontrol 9 · Business Standard 5 · The Ken 7 (2023–26). Payment goes through, Premium never switches on, and the reader is asked to pay again.
"Even after purchasing 4 years plan. Subscription not recognizing."ET Prime reader, Google Play
2. Ads and pop-ups shown to people who paid
Mint 20 · ET 11 · Moneycontrol 10. Moneycontrol now sells a separate "Black" tier to remove the ads. ET subscribers get prompts to buy its AI product on top.
"First they told me premium subscription will be ad-free and after payment I do see many ads."ET Prime reader
3. Sales calls and spam
ET 11 reviews about sales calls, email and WhatsApp pushes. Business Standard readers describe repeated calls when a renewal is late. Mint readers get WhatsApp renewal messages. Moneycontrol readers get loan cross-sells.
"I get 7-10 calls in a day to subscribe to ET Prime."ET reader, Google Play
4. Renewals readers can't control
Mint 10 (can't cancel auto-renew, charged after opting out) · ET 10 (auto-renewed, double-charged) · Business Standard (a 10-year payment mandate).
"you force them to accept payment mandate for next 10 years. Very bad mandate."Business Standard reader, Aug 2026
5. Support that doesn't answer
ET 20 (19 of them subscribers) · Mint 18 · Moneycontrol 16. Email only, no phone, tickets with no resolution. Meanwhile their Play replies (71–98% of reviews) are mostly templates.
"I have sent more than 6 mails to inquire about the same. But nothing is resolved."ET Prime reader
Where The Ken already stands apart
- Zero ad complaints in 405 reviews. Paying readers have never seen ads, by design since 2017.
- No reviews about sales calls, WhatsApp spam or upsell pop-ups.
- The one shared failure, paid but not recognised, is something it can fix (project 2).

What rivals' readers ask for
Requests that show up for several brands are a sign of what the whole category's readers expect.
| Request | Who asks | The Ken today |
|---|---|---|
| Ad-free that actually works when you pay | Moneycontrol 8 (all payers), ET 4 (ad-free, or a cheaper tier with ads), Mint 2 plus 20 complaints | Already true Worth saying out loud |
| Tablet / iPad layout | TMC 16, Mint 7, Moneycontrol 4, Business Standard (ePaper on iPad) | Has an iPad app |
| Read-aloud, better voices, faster playback | Mint (2–3× speed), Business Standard, ET, TMC 3 | Most persistent request in The Ken's own reviews too |
| Dark mode, font size, highlights | TMC 12 (dark mode), Moneycontrol 5, Mint 3 | Has them |
| Cheaper entry: student, monthly, trial | Business Standard 4, TMC 3, Mint 2 | Monthly only in the app, at ₹1,499 |

| ePaper usability | Business Standard 19, ET 6, Mint 7 | Not applicable The Ken has no print edition, yet. See Kenrise Print Media |
Five openings for The Ken
What the rivals' reviews suggest The Ken could do. None of these needs a new product.
1. Sell "a subscription that respects you"
The things paying readers hate most about ET, Mint and Moneycontrol are things The Ken has never done: ads for payers, upsell pop-ups, daily sales calls, renewals they can't cancel. Say it on the pricing page in plain words: no ads, no sales calls, a reminder before every renewal, cancel by email. Rivals can't copy it without giving up ad revenue.
2. Be the one where paying just works
"Paid but not recognised" shows up for every brand. Whoever fixes it first has a real advantage. A daily payment-to-subscription check (project 2) makes it a promise The Ken can keep.
3. A switching offer for unhappy payers
73% of ET Prime payers and 75% of Mint payers who wrote reviews are negative, and several say they'll switch at renewal. A "switch from ET Prime or Mint" offer, timed to their renewal season and sold on the points above, targets readers who already pay for business news. Corporate teams are a natural channel.
4. Answer the TMC price objection
TMC readers rate The Ken's product higher. The one switcher who left cited price. The 3-year plan (about ₹3,333 a year) already beats TMC Premium, so show it on the public pricing page instead of only to existing subscribers.
5. Audio, the request every brand shares
Read-aloud and better playback come up for Mint, Business Standard, ET and TMC, and it is The Ken's own most persistent request. The Ken already leads the category on podcasts (Daybreak #4 in Apple India News), so audio for every story is the natural extension (project 7).
Keep watching
Run this comparison every quarter. When a rival fixes its ad load or support, or a new complaint starts spreading across the category, The Ken should know before it shows up in its own churn. That's the reader-and-brand watch in project 6.

Pulled from Google Play and the App Store on 5 October 2026. Keyword filters only chose which reviews to read: every review was read and tagged by hand with the same aspect list used for The Ken. A reviewer counts as a payer only if they say they pay or paid. Quotes are exact excerpts, without names. The App Store returns reviews in "most helpful" order, so iOS samples skew older.
